#81 Eat a Raw Egg

This bucket list item was complete on 20th February 2010 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

For anyone who has watched the Rocky movies, you know exactly what this item is referring to. In Rocky, the first movie that launched the franchise, Sylvester Stallone wakes up at 4:00 am, cracks five eggs into a glass and proceeds to drink them before starting his morning workout. I watched these movies when I was a kid and as a kid there are many things you see that make you cringe; this was one of them.

I remember thinking that it looked disgusting and it must have tasted even worse. When this scene appeared in the movie it create a cultural phenomenon, an action that so many people witnessed and wanted to mimic. I did not try it then but I am sure many people did following the movie debut. Even today, if you search the Internet for videos of people drinking raw eggs, several of them will refer to drinking them “Rocky Balboa style”.

Although I thought it looked disgusting and I was certain that it would in fact be disgusting, the truth was that I would never know what it was actually like until I tried it. This contemplation always stuck with me from childhood. It may sound funny to some people that of all thoughts, this was the one stuck in the back of my mind. I don’t know why it stuck with me for so long, but for some reason it did.

When I started to write down items for the bucket list, it was one of the first items on the list. I felt that putting it on the list was a good excuse to finally find out the answer to the question that I had carried with me for so long. As I mentioned in my previous blog post How I Started My Bucket List, I wanted curious items to be on the list even though they may not be difficult to achieve.

The task of completing this item was very simple; go to the supermarket, buy eggs, crack an egg into a glass and drink it. I decided that 20th February 2010 was going to be the day that I would complete this item. Two of my friends, Kyle and Adam, decided to join me in this endeavour so we gathered at my apartment and cracked three eggs into three separate glasses. My brother, Galen, also assisted by filming us to make sure we had proof of completing it.

After a quick cheers we each tilted our glasses back and drank the raw egg. It was disgusting. I thought it would slide down my throat pretty quickly but instead, it made its way slowly and I could feel it as it moved. The taste was not enjoyable and the slimy texture did not help the situation. In the end, it was exactly like I thought it was going to be but at least now I know for sure.
